Tim "Original Fat Don" Dougherty graciously accepted a crutch after Turkey Bowl XI, symbolizing his retirement from the TFL. Tim, with tears running down his cheeks, thanked the players and fans for their support, as well as the TFL Commissioners, the league's governing body, for the acceptance of his resignation.
On a side note, Tim would later find out that the TFL Commissioners actually did not accept his resignation request and entered him in the Turkey Bowl XII Draft regardless of his want to hang-up the cleats.
Turkey Bowl XII had all the makings of, what some of us have recently come to call, "the game the league needs". With blowouts and uncontested wins mounting, the TFL was, and actually still is, in need of a close and highly contested game between two squads. It appeared as if Grease Busters and Four Lokos Deep would answer the call for that before mentioned game, but, unfortunately, things would not quite work out that way.
Gunslingers Mike Trill and Doc would pace the Four Lokos Deep aerial attack, while Jon Hart and Keith Cottom would provide ample protection and guide FLD to a 7-3 victory. Initially, for at least a bit over half the game, Grease Busters would go stride for stride with FLD: Answering each FLD score in fine fashion. FLD would take a 3-2 lead into the half, but, soon after, Grease Busters would answer and tie the game at 3-3. It was, at this point, where each of us truly believed the game would be decided in its fleeting moments.
We were definitely wrong. After Grease Busters found the endzone for their third score FLD would go on a 4-TD rampage. Doc and Trill, throwing two-touchdowns each during that span, alternating in fact, picked apart the Grease Busters secondary to eventually lead FLD to the win.
Many players, on both sides of the ball and for both teams, contributed in many ways, but it would be Trill and Dougherty who played the most important roles. FLD, controlling both TFL perennial quarterbacks, left Grease Busters continually stifled under center. Paul Middleton and Tuna Buscella would do their best to fill the GB's QB woes, but, in the end, neither could match the performance of the two leading passers in the game's epic history.
Ian Hart, playing in only his third Turkey Bowl game, would capture MVP honors. Ian would find pay-dirt three-times and, in the process, silence a crowd that, after early game and career drops, was continuously taunting him.
Accolades most also be thrown Paul Middleton's direction. Paul, the TFL's do-it-all athlete, strove to keep Grease Busters competitive throughout the game. Never leaving the Turkey Bowl XI field, Middleton set-up as the team's primary return man, QB, and WR. Paul would be the only Grease Buster to cross the goal line.
With TB XI in the bag the competitors will spend the next year in rigorous training mode preparing for their next meeting on Pritchard Field. Beer and BBQ, two of the most coveted training methods for TFL members, will be employed on a weekly basis, as well as cigars and other tobacco products, illustrating the illustrious condition and shape each player spurs to keep his body in.
