Timing/Score Keeping Issues

Recently, several people have approached me about the issue of time/score keeping; which makes me think that it might be time for a change. Originally, games were played with half time being taken when a team reached 5 and a winner being the first team to 10. The first 4 years that system worked fine, we had no problem reaching 10.

Recently though the scoring has slowed down a little bit (age and beer catching up to us?) and we haven't seen 10 pts on the score board since 2003 (Turkey Bowl 4). In the past few years we've kind of been just going with whatever... "we'll take half time at X o'clock", "the game ends at X points or X o'clock, whatever comes first".

Being that we are an organized league, complete with an annual charitable function, jerseys, goal posts, etc. I think we can do better. Therefore I'm opening a topic of discussion to find the best solution of moving from a score based game to a time based game. I know everyone reads the message boards, so if you have an idea or disagree with something you need to post it. If you're not involved in the discussion and don't like the final conclusion you have no grounds to complain (Tim Doc?). Here's what I've had suggested so far:

* 10:00 kickoff. First half 10:00-12:00. Half time 12:00-12:20. Second half 12:20-2:20. If the game is tied at the end of regulation the game will enter into NCAA overtime format.

* I like that but with a little tweak, 9:45 kickoff. First half 9:45-11:30. Half time 11:30-11:45. Second half 11:45-1:30. Tie game -> NCAA overtime.

With a schedule like this a team could score more than 10 points in a TB for the first time ever; I think the universe might implode. Does our scoreboard have enough bulbs to show 12? But moving to this there is also issues. We obviously won't have a play clock, so whats to stop a team in the lead from taking 5 minutes between snaps (and no, I don't want to adopt a play clock. I think that's getting too involved. I'm fine with going by somebody's watch, but a 45 second clock might be too much).

Example Team A is up 12-11 and its 1:19. In reality Team B should get the ball back if the get a defensive stop, but that wouldn't be the case if Team A just took 3 and a half minutes in the huddle before each snap.

Another example. Team A makes a defensive stop and gets the ball back at 11:27. Are they running a legit 2 minute drill and the half ends at 11:30 on the nose? (where's the official time keeper?) Or is it just assumed that this is the last possession of the half, even if they don't get into the end zone until 11:32?

Just some things to think about. What does everyone else think?

Times yours.

9:45 kickoff, as long as everyone doesn't mind sacrificing a whole fifteen minutes of sleep, which, if they do, is ridiculous

I think kickoff should be 945 or possibly 930??...or at least tell the bouncers and mark 930 for check in so they are there for tee time. Certainly us douches will be at the field stretching at about 740. Also, one of the ladies should have an official watch that we all agree is the time and as for the possession at half or end, I could care less either way being my team will have a comfortable lead but I guess I'd prefer that it would be the last drive of the half regardless of going past the time.

I'm down with 9:45 kick off (meaning kick off @ 9:45, so if you want to stretch and get ready get there before 9:45), and possessions being able to go a few minutes past the time limit.

what about length of halves? 1:45 or 2 hours? and how do we stop peeps from milking the clock? gentleman's agreement? loss of down if you take ridiculously long with the clock winding down and the game on the line?

I think 1:45 or 2 is ok either way....and although their will be no gentlemen on the field I'd agree with that ruling and I loss of down. Are we still a go with Kate Smith's God Bless America???

If a team is deliberately taking too long at the end of a half/game what do we do? Old school Mississippi count? I'm not talking about as soon as the ball is set you start counting off; but if they start taking forever in the huddle.
